It’s been a week or so since last time. I am not feeling very well – it may be the summer heat, or I am getting ill. Not sure what to hope for on that one.

Now; in about two weeks time I am supposed to hold a workshop in composition and seeing for photography. Today when I strolled about searching for images, I was thinking about the importance of cropping an image even before it’s exposed. What I mean by this is when you see something interesting that you want to photograph – what you need to do is to remove everything which is not interesting, through your lens.

Just think about the phenomena with photographs from someone’s holiday. The wife or husband leaning against that really cool statue in front of a really cool building. The problem is; very many people tend to zoom out which means including absolutely everything in the surroundings. The wife/husband becomes extremely small in the photograph, and the whole thing tends to get kind of uninteresting (and yes, I have made this mistake myself before I learnt how to do it properly).

The whole idea is to think about what you see as if it what already a photograph, and crop it accordingly in advance. There are questions to be asked before you make the exposure; exactly what is it that you like about this view? Is it that one detail, or is it “the whole picture”? What can you remove to make it more interesting?

I would like to stress that I am not talking about physically removing things from your view. 🙂 I am talking about zooming in, moving yourself a step to the right or left to change perspective or to make an object come outside the frames of the photograp-to-be.

What you see here today is a result of cropping through the lens and then another cropping when editing.

If you want to know more about my thoughts on composition and cropping, feel free to ask. 🙂

Enjoy!
